Since this boss is Electric-Flying, both Ice-type and Rock-type attacks deal 1.6x super-effective damage. However, many raiding groups end up with poor results because they overlook the boss's actual movepool and unique Shadow Raid enrage mechanics.

It is easy to assume that strong Ice-type Pokémon should dominate this fight. But before choosing your team, take a closer look at Shadow Thundurus's actual moveset.

Its Fast Moves are Thunder Shock and Astonish, while its Charged Moves include Thunder Punch, Thunder, Brick Break, and Crunch. Notably, Shadow Thundurus has no Flying-type attacks in this raid.

That makes Ground-type Pokémon particularly useful. They take no damage from Shadow Thundurus's Electric-type attacks, so moves like Thunder Punch and Thunder cannot hurt them. A Rock/Ground attacker such as Shadow Rhyperior can therefore stay in the fight longer while still dealing super-effective Rock-type damage.

Shadow Thundurus Shadow Raid Schedule & Special Mechanics

The five-star Shadow Raid featuring Incarnate Forme Shadow Thundurus runs locally from September, 2026 at 6:00 AM to Tuesday, October 6, 2026 at 10:00 PM. The raids become available every weekend inside this overall event period. After you win the battle, your capture attempt includes a chance to get the shiny variant of Shadow Thundurus.

Shadow Raids follow unique rules that regular five-star raids do not use. Shadow raid bosses will only spawn inside gyms taken over by Team GO Rocket. Remote Raid Passes cannot be used for these special fights. Every participating trainer has to arrive physically at that gym location to join the battle.

Enrage is another critical mechanic exclusive to 3-star and 5-star Shadow Raid bosses. The longer your fight drags on, the more attack and defense buffs Shadow Thundurus gains. Slow or poorly matched raid teams will struggle harder as the boss continuously becomes tougher. Purification brings multiple useful stat changes. Every single IV value of this Pokémon gets a +2 increase, capped at the maximum value of 15. Its combat level automatically becomes Level 25. The Frustration charge move will disappear and get replaced with a proper usable attack.
