pokémon GO Twilight Trails: Mega Edition Takes GBL to a New Level

Pokémon GO’s Twilight Trails season is now live, running from September 8 to December 1, 2026. The season introduces new Paldea Pokémon, Mega Evolution content, Dynamax encounters, GO Pass progression, and updated rewards.

The biggest change is the arrival of Mega Pokémon in GO Battle League, with three new Mega Edition formats launching at the start of the season. Here’s what Trainers should know and where to focus their resources.

Mega Pokémon Enter GO Battle League

Mega Pokémon have traditionally been used mainly for raids and other PvE content. That changes with Twilight Trails, as eligible Mega Pokémon can now participate in dedicated Mega Edition formats.

The three new formats are:

Great League: Mega Edition	1,500 CP
Ultra League: Mega Edition	2,500 CP
Master League: Mega Edition	No CP limit

One of the most important rules is that eligible Mega Pokémon can have their CP temporarily reduced to meet the limits in Great League: Mega Edition and Ultra League: Mega Edition. Their CP returns to its original value after the battle.

This means Trainers do not need to permanently change a Pokémon just to try the new formats.

Some eligible Mega Pokémon can also gain an additional Charged Attack regardless of their Mega Level, adding another factor to consider when building PvP teams.

 

Why the First Week Matters

From September 8–15, all three Mega Edition formats will be available:

Great League: Mega Edition

Ultra League: Mega Edition

Master League: Mega Edition

For PvP players, this first week is more useful for testing the new environment than immediately deciding which Mega Pokémon is the strongest.

Mega Edition does not have an established long-term meta yet. Real battles will reveal which Pokémon can create shield pressure, handle common threats, and fit effectively into different team compositions.

The opening week also offers 4× Stardust from win rewards, excluding end-of-set rewards, making it a good opportunity to earn resources while experimenting with the new formats.

 

What Should You Prepare for Mega Edition?

Rather than powering up every Pokémon that can Mega Evolve, start by checking your existing roster.

Pokémon that already have strong PvP potential in their standard form are generally more interesting candidates to test in Mega Edition. Before making a major investment, consider:

• Their performance in Great, Ultra, or Master League
• Available Fast and Charged Attacks
• Typing and important resistances
• Whether you already have a strong PvP specimen
• Stardust and XL Candy costs

How well the Mega form fits your current team

If your resources are limited, it may be better to hold onto Stardust and XL Candy until the first weeks of the season reveal which Mega Pokémon are actually worth investing in.

 

New Pokémon and Dynamax Content

Mega GBL is the biggest competitive change, but Twilight Trails also adds new content for collectors and PvE players.

Maschiff and Mabosstiff are joining Pokémon GO this season, giving collectors a new Paldea evolution line to work toward.

Mega Evolution will also remain a major part of the season, with Mega Staraptor, Mega Chandelure, and additional Mega Pokémon arriving during Twilight Trails.

Dynamax content is expanding as well, with Dynamax Rhyhorn, Dynamax Sneasel, and Dynamax Sizzlipede appearing in Max Battles. A dedicated Max Battle Day will also feature Dynamax Uxie, Dynamax Mesprit, and Dynamax Azelf.

These additions are less urgent for PvP players, but they are worth watching if you are building a stronger Max Battle roster or completing your collection.

 

GO Pass Adds More Seasonal Progression

Twilight Trails also introduces GO Pass, giving Trainers another way to progress throughout the season.

Completing Pass Tasks earns GO Points, which increase your rank and unlock additional rewards.

These rewards can include extra Candy from trades, increased Gift-related limits, longer Daily Adventure Incense duration, and additional XP or Stardust from hatching Eggs.

The main benefit is that GO Pass progression can fit naturally into regular gameplay instead of requiring a separate grinding routine.

 

GO Battle League Rewards Are Updated

The new season also refreshes the GO Battle League encounter pool.

Rank-up encounters can include Toxtricity, Dondozo, Kingdra, Duraludon, and Pikachu Libre. Other seasonal encounters include Vulpix, Swablu, Inkay, Mareanie, Snorlax, Dratini, Beldum, Honedge, Mimikyu, Cramorant, and Morpeko.

A free GO Battle League Timed Research track is also available during the season. By completing battles and victories, Trainers can earn rewards including Stardust, Rare Candy XL, an Elite Fast TM, and an Elite Charged TM.

For regular PvP players, these rewards add another reason to keep battling throughout the season.
