Pokémon GO Mega Finale: Mega Mewtwo X & Y Raid Guide

Pokémon GO Fest 2026: Mega Finale puts Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y in the spotlight across two days. Mega Mewtwo X appears in Super Mega Raids on Saturday, September 5, while Mega Mewtwo Y takes over on Sunday, September 6. Both days run from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time.

If your Remote Raid Passes or playtime are limited, knowing which day to prioritize can make a big difference. This guide covers the Mega Mewtwo raid schedule, useful counters, Special Backgrounds, new Mewtwo effects, and how Armored Mewtwo fits into the same weekend.

Official Mega Finale Raid Schedule

The main Mega Mewtwo schedule is split between the two event days:

• Saturday, September 5: Mega Mewtwo X in Super Mega Raids
• Sunday, September 6: Mega Mewtwo Y in Super Mega Raids
• Event hours: 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time

Mega Mewtwo X and Y will appear in Super Mega Raids at certain Gyms. At other Gyms, Mega Raids will rotate with the active habitat. The official schedule includes four habitats each day, with each habitat appearing twice.

If you are planning an in-person raid route, check the schedule ahead of time. This makes it easier to line up your Mega Mewtwo raids with the habitats and Mega Raid bosses you want to target.

 

Mega Mewtwo X vs. Y: Which Day Should You Prioritize?

The basic choice is straightforward: Saturday is for Mega Mewtwo X, while Sunday is for Mega Mewtwo Y.

If you are building Mega Mewtwo X, focus your main raid push on Saturday. If Mega Mewtwo Y is your priority, save your strongest raid window for Sunday.

Want both forms? Split your raid time across the two days instead of using all your passes on the first day. There is no Remote Raid limit from September 5 through September 6, so players have more freedom to join raids remotely throughout the weekend.

For local players, there is also no need to stand around waiting for a single Mewtwo raid. When a Super Mega Raid is unavailable, use the active habitat window to catch featured Pokémon or challenge other Mega Raid bosses.

 

Best Counters for Mega Mewtwo Raids

Mega Mewtwo X and Mega Mewtwo Y are both Psychic-type Pokémon, making Dark-, Ghost-, and Bug-type attackers strong options.

Tyranitar, Darkrai, Gengar, and Chandelure are useful raid staples, but your final lineup should depend on their movesets, levels, and the Pokémon available in your account.

Mega Evolving a suitable counter can also provide a useful team-wide advantage during raids. In addition, all Mega-Evolved Pokémon receive an extra CP boost during Mega Finale, giving players another reason to prepare a Mega-capable raid team before the event begins.

Set up your counter parties in advance so you can spend the six-hour event windows actually raiding rather than adjusting teams between lobbies.

 

Special Backgrounds and Mega Energy

Mega Finale introduces a Mega Evolution-themed Special Background for Pokémon caught from Mega Raids during the Mega Ascension event and Mega Finale weekend.

After catching a Pokémon from a Mega Raid, check its summary page to see whether it received the special background. When an eligible Pokémon with this background is Mega Evolved, its background gains additional effects for the duration of the Mega Evolution.

Mega Energy is another important reason to keep raiding. Defeating Mega-Evolved Pokémon in Mega Raids provides Mega Energy, while players can also occasionally earn Mega Energy by walking with a Buddy Pokémon after previously Mega Evolving a Pokémon from the same evolutionary line.

For Pokémon that have separate X and Y Mega Evolutions, the required Mega Energy is also separate. This means players targeting both Mega Mewtwo forms should plan their resources accordingly.

 

Mega Mewtwo X and Y Bring New Battle Effects

Mega Finale also introduces new Charged Attacks and Adventure Effects for Mega Mewtwo.

Mega Mewtwo X will know Dynamic Punch+, while Mega Mewtwo Y will know Future Sight+.

Dynamic Punch+ can unlock an Adventure Effect that increases your Pokémon's damage against Mega-Evolved Pokémon in Mega Raids and Super Mega Raids. In Super Mega Raids, the effect can also allow Trainers to break two shields at once instead of one.

Future Sight+ offers a different utility. Its Adventure Effect can reveal Pokémon that will appraise as three-star or higher when you enter an encounter. The Pokémon will glow when the effect identifies it as having high stats.

These effects give Mega Mewtwo X and Y different utility beyond simply collecting their Mega Energy.

 

Armored Mewtwo Is a Separate Raid Target

Do not confuse the Mega Mewtwo schedule with Armored Mewtwo.

Armored Mewtwo returns in five-star raids on both September 5 and September 6, while Mega Mewtwo X and Y remain the featured Super Mega Raid bosses on their respective days.

There is also an important collection detail: Shiny Armored Mewtwo will not be available during this event.

If you are mainly hunting a Shiny, Armored Mewtwo should not be your primary target. If your goal is Mega Energy, Mega Mewtwo X or Y, or Mega Evolution-themed Special Backgrounds, prioritize the Super Mega Raids on the corresponding day.

 

Remote Raids and Mega Finale Bonuses

Several official bonuses make the weekend easier to plan around:

• No Remote Raid limit: September 5–6
• Extra CP boost: all Mega-Evolved Pokémon during the event
• Eight rotating habitats: four each day, with each appearing twice
• GO Pass Deluxe: Bonus Candy, Candy XL, and XP from Mega Raids
• Increased Shiny chances: certain Mega Raids and event Pokémon encounters for GO Pass Deluxe players

The Mega Ascension lead-in runs from August 31 at 10:00 a.m. to September 4 at 11:59 p.m. local time. If you still have branching Timed Research or preparation objectives to complete, finish them before the lead-in ends.
