IconUnlock Mewtwo and Mega Mewtwo X & Y in Pokemon Legends: Z-A

Mewtwo is making its debut to Lumiose, and you can add it to your team through a free in-game event. Along with the Legendary Pokémon itself, you'll also receive its two Mega Stones—Mewtwonite X and Mewtwonite Y—through Mystery Gift. These unlock a short side mission set deep under Lysandre Labs, and finishing it rewards you with Mewtwo.

Whether you're playing on Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, everything works the same. As long as you've beaten the main story, you're ready to jump straight into this new mission.

How to Claim Free Mewtwo and Mewtwonite X & Y

How to Get Mewtwonite X & Y

You can claim your Mega Stones starting December 2, 2025.

Just follow these steps:

1. Open the main menu → Link Play

2. Go to Mystery Gift

3. Select Get via Internet

4. Receive both Mega Stones

5. Save your game

You'll find both stones neatly stored in your Mega Stones pocket.

Where to Start the Mewtwo Mission

Once you have the stones, head over to Lysandre Café. Something deep within Lysandre Labs reacts to the Mega Stones, and exploring the furthest sections will trigger the new mission.

Clear the mission successfully, and Mewtwo becomes yours.

> This mission is available in both Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition.

Mega Evolving Your New Legendary

 Mewtwonite X → Mega Mewtwo X (Psychic/Fighting)

 Mewtwonite Y → Mega Mewtwo Y (Psychic)

Just have Mewtwo hold the appropriate stone before battle. Both forms hit incredibly hard, but each shines in different team setups — X leans into raw physical power, while Y becomes a glass cannon with frightening Psychic output.

A Quick Look at the Trio

Pokemon Type Height Weight
Mewtwo Psychic 6'7" 269 lbs.
Mega Mewtwo X Psychic/Fighting 7'7" 280 lbs.
Mega Mewtwo Y Psychic 4'11" 72.8 lbs.

Why This Event Matters

Even if you already have a Mewtwo in Pokémon Home, it won't help you here—Home isn't compatible with Legends: Z-A yet. This event Mewtwo is your only way to use the Legendary in Lumiose right now.

Plus, with the Mega Dimension DLC dropping on December 10 and enemy levels climbing past 100, having a fully Mega-capable Mewtwo is going to be a serious advantage. Consider this event your early power boost.
