Nintendo recently released a trailer showing off Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's Terastal type and other new details for the upcoming game. Players will be able to embark on three separate journeys to explore an open world as they see fit. A major issue with the series has always been the lack of challenge. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet's new Terastal type or Tera type can solve this difficult problem in the main game.
Game Freak has been trying to increase the difficulty of the series over the years, such as Pokémon Black 2 and White 2's challenge mode. This brings many features such as higher-level trainers, smarter AI, additional trainer Pokémon, and more items held by rival monsters. The game has been less challenging since then, with the most recent offense being a mandatory generic Exp. Share Pokémon Sword and Shield. This allows all monsters in the party to gain experience each time they defeat an enemy, often causing the party to over-level up. Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have a chance to bring back challenges with the new Terastal Phenomenon feature.
In the latest trailer for Scarlet and Violet, three different paths players can take are revealed. Fans were briefly seen fighting the Grass-type Gym Leader Brassius while showing the route of the Road to Victory. Normally, he would only have grass-type Pokémon, but instead, he would throw away the rock-type Pokémon, Sudowoodo. Brassius then uses the new Terastallize feature to turn the monster into a grass shape. This is important because Gym Leaders can now have any Pokémon on their team.
Pokémon Scarlet & Violet's Tera type can add new challenges
Terastallizing is a new mechanic unique to the Paldea region that allows Trainers to infuse their Pokémon with Terastal energy, changing their type. Any Pokémon in the Paldea region can have the ability to Terastallize. Since the trailer shows Brassius using this feature to turn Sudowoodo into a Grass-type, players will have to be extra prepared for the fight. Gym leaders can have Pokémon make up for weaknesses in their team. For example, Fighting is great for entering Ice Gyms, but opponents may have Spirit in their team.
Game Freak is changing the basic formula of the main series of games by adding three story campaigns in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Trainers will be able to explore an open world with their friends. Gym leaders can be challenged in any order, and Terastallizing allows Pokémon to change their type.
