PKMBuy - Now let's discuss what's wrong with Pokemon Legends: Arceus?
A new version of Pokémon will be released soon. Like the January release of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, everyone was excited and how fun it was for everyone to hunt down their Big Buizel and hunt down the shiny things more efficiently. Just as this Scarlet and Violet is about to be released, let's talk, do you really think Pokemon Legends: Arceus is a good video game?
If you still like Pokemon Legends: Arceus, I totally get it, and I'm a huge Pokemon fan myself. This article isn't telling you that you shouldn't like Pokemon Legends: Arceus, I'm just saying it's a terrible game, and it leaves a lot to be desired.
I also admit that the first hour was great. Diving into Pokemon and catching them in real time is both new and exciting, and I enjoyed being able to freely explore the Obsidian Fieldlands. I was eager to discover everything the world could see, but it didn't take me long to realize that there wasn't really anything to see.
All of Legends' maps are big, flat wastelands with nothing. Nothing cool, no puzzles to solve, no amazing vistas. There's nothing geographically interesting about them, and they don't feel like real places. If you told me that these areas are procedurally generated spaces with different Pokemon and resource concentrations, I'd believe it. It doesn't feel like there is any intention or craftsmanship here, they are the most versatile biomes I've seen.
It doesn't help that Pokemon themselves don't feel alive. Again, they just seem to be clustered randomly, without any rhyme or reason. Yes, you'll find more ice-shaped Pokemon in Alabaster Iceland, but within each area, Pokemon are just thrown at random. It feels like Pokemon don't live in these places because they don't have personal behavior. They're all just walking around in their zone, going back and forth endlessly like they do. I've never felt any level of immersion in playing Legends because it doesn't hide the fact that Pokemon are just put here for you to capture.
If the game was particularly engaging, I might have forgiven the dull, lifeless world, but unfortunately it isn't. The mechanics of catching Pokemon have barely changed from start to finish, and you spend a lot more time collecting acorns and stones than collecting Pokemon. Catching an Alpha Pokemon is the game's only actual challenge, but it's more frustrating than difficult due to clunky controls and inconsistent items. Combat is more tedious and boring than the main game due to the ability removed, which I don't think is possible. Noble boss battles are the only interesting things it introduces, but they're all exactly the same. Legend: Arceus is a decent four hour experience, over 30 hours.
I think most people feel the same way, even if they don't admit it. Even though it was a relatively dry year for the game, after the first week, everyone completely forgot about the game. I haven't seen any Legend: Arceus content on any social media since February.
What's most impressive about Game Freak is the way it makes players accept mediocrity. I've heard Legends: Arceus described as a good first step in making for a full-price game in a decades-long series, although I'd like future games to build on it as well. Such concessions are outrageous. The only saving grace of Legends: Arceus is that it has Pokemon in it. If they make a great open-world Pokemon game (praying for Scarlet and Violet), we don't have to thank Legends: Arceus for paving the way for us. It's a terrible game, quickly made by a small studio that's been pulled too thin for years. Fans, developers and our Lord and Savior Arceus deserve better than this.Scarlet and Violet is set to release on November 18th, and judging from previous videos and some leaks, it's worth looking forward to.
