Rock-type Pokémon can have steel variants, such as how Onix evolves into Steelix.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet can expand on the variant concept by adding time-changing Pokémon to the mix. Scarlet and Violet's legendary Pokémon are themed around the ancient past and future, and this is an opportunity to learn more about the current Pokémon variations.
