PKMBuy BDSP - What are some underrated monsters in Pokémon BDSP?

With over 400 Pokémon available for players to catch in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl (BDSP), some Pokémon are underrated in BDSP. Originally released in 2021, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl Sinnoh recreated players of the 4th generation RPG with a brand new HD engine and modern features.

Pokémon BDSP was developed by Studio ILCA, which previously developed the Pokémon Home cloud service application in 2020. While the Sinnoh Remake is largely faithful to the 2006 RPG, the Pokémon BDSP features an expanded implementation of the Game Book, allowing players to capture hundreds of Pokémon.

In the Pokémon Gen 4 Remake, players can encounter Pokémon from previous generations without having to wait to unlock the Pokémon BDSP National Dex. With the new Sinnoh Underground giving trainers access to Kanto, Johto, and Hoenn Pokémon throughout the game, there are many Pokémon that have been overlooked. This is BDSP's most underrated Pokémon.

Johto's Houndoom in Pokémon BDSP is an underrated fire type

Johto's Houndoom

When Pokémon Diamond and Pearl launched in 2006, the game was inadvertently difficult for players who didn't opt for the Gen 4 Starter Pokémon Chimchar. Since there aren't many Fire-type Pokémon in the game to catch in the wild, some Gym Leaders and Trainer battles are harder to survive for some players who don't have Fire-type Pokémon.

Sinnoh Pokémon Platinum Manual addresses this problem to a large extent, giving players a Houndoom that can be easily evolved early in the game. At Pokémon BDSP Houndour has been removed from Route 214 and moved to the new Grand Underground. Fire can actually be encountered as early as the Eternal City after obtaining the Explorer's Toolkit from the NPC. Evolution of Houndour Houndoom is a powerful fire type that is perfect for players who choose Starters Piplup and Turtwig.

Pokémon BDSP Grand Underground Gardevoir deserves more love

While Gardevoir is popular among Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire, the Spirit type is another Pokémon that may initially be overlooked by Pokémon BDSP players. Just like Houndour and Houndoom, Gardevoir can be found in the Grand Underground on the Pokémon BDSP early in the game.

In Sinnoh Remake, Ralts can be encountered in Fountainspring and Dazzling Cave Pokémon Hideaways. Players who catch Ralts can evolve them into Gardevoir at level 30. Powerful Psychic Pokémon are the perfect counterattack against Hearthome City gym leader Fantina and her Ghost-type team.

Johto's Azumarill can be found in the Pokémon BDSP Grand Marsh

Johto's Azumarill

Originally debuting in Pokémon Gold and Silver, the Azumarill Evolution series is one of the best fighters in the series. Azumarill is underrated in Pokémon BDSP, as players often overlook it for other powerful Water-type Pokémon, such as Kanto's Tyrannosaurus. The cute blue Pokémon is actually one of the most powerful Pokémon in the game.

Azurill and Marill can be first met in the Pokémon Brilliant Diamond & Shining Pearl's Great Marsh. Players who successfully grab the water attribute can double their Pokémon's attack attribute when they evolve into Azumarill at level 18. Azumarill becomes too powerful after learning to move the abdominal drum, which further increases its attack stat by an additional six stages.

Pokémon BDSP Toxicroak is in the Safari area and should be caught

Pokémon BDSP Toxicroak

Another Pokémon that can be found in the Great Swamp of the Pokémon BDSP is Viper. Because it mostly spawns in Gen 4 Hunting Zones, Poison is often overlooked. However, the Ferocious Frog can actually evolve early in the game by the player capturing Croagunk in the Great Underground.

Since Croagunk is available early, it's actually a great replacement for the Pokémon BDSP Starter Chimchar, since it's a secondary combat type. After evolving into Toxicroak at level 37, the poison/fighting type becomes a great counter-attack against the Pokémon BDSP gym leaders Gardenia, Byron, and Candace. Toxicroak is also a powerful Pokémon that can be brought into the game's elite four-player battles, making it an all-around solid attacker.

Pokémon BDSP's Rotom is versatile but neglected in old castles

Pokémon BDSP Rotom

In Pokémon BDSP, players can obtain the elusive ghost-type Pokémon Rotom in the old castle. The mysterious Pokémon can only be encountered after defeating the Elite Four and interacting with the haunted TV at night.

Due to its water/earth type, Gastrodon is resistant to electrical attacks, making it one of the best water-based Pokémon among Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. The incredible double typing makes it resistant to many of the game's attacks, allowing players to use it in many battles.

Sinnoh's Gastrodon Needs More Love In Pokémon Diamond & Pearl

Sinnoh's Gastrodon

Gastrodon is one of Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl's strongest defensive Pokémon due to its unique typing. On the surface, the adorable Water-type looks the opposite of intimidating, which often has trainers looking past it in the Sinnoh region.

Because of its Water/Ground-type though, Gastrodon is resistant to Electric attacks, making it one of the best Water-based Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl. It's incredible dual-typing makes it strong against many attacks in the game, allowing players to utilize it in many battles.

Togekiss in Pokémon BDSP overlooked for its location

In the popular Pokémon Platinum RPG, the notorious player gets a Togepi egg from Sinnoh Champion Cynthia. This changed in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, as Togepi is now a rarity in Grand Underground. Its evolution, Togekiss, was largely underrated in the Shenno remake due to its location shift and low encounter rate.

Pokémon BDSP Baby Pokemon is worth tracking because its evolution to Togekiss is so powerful. It can use fairy and flying-type moves like Air Slash and Dazzling Gleam, making it a great counter for several gym leaders and elite quads. Togekiss has also emerged as a strong contender in the competitive scene, as its Follow Me move is perfect for double combat.

Because players can access many National Pokédex Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, the Nintendo Switch RPG has many underrated Pokemon that sometimes go unnoticed. With Gen 9 Pokémon Crimson and Violet announced for release in late 2022, it'll be interesting to see which beloved Pokémon the game's new mega-book overlooks.
